I’m Cold but I’m being really Brave about it

I saw a meme with this phrase and I thought it was really funny. I don’t know why it just struck a nerve in my funny bone lol! Who prefers cold weather like me- cozied up in a blanket, with some hot chocolate, feeling the rush of the cool air on my face on the first fall day. I love fall/autumn and winter, not only from the cool temperate climate we finally get here in Houston but for the celebrations- Back to School, Fall break, Halloween, Thanksgiving and my very favorite Christmas!

I think living in a warm/humid climate makes me like cold weather more, because we never truly experience brutal winters- no snow, sleet, or ice, just cool temperate weather only needing a really heavy coat maybe one or two weeks a year, and even then hat and gloves are an option not a necessity.

So compared to our summers winter and fall are great, because our summers are brutal. There are long stretches of the day in July and August that it is simply too hot to go outside and it is not recommended. The weather everyday is reported with the “Heat Index” so everyone is aware and can stay safe, and it is just miserable. Walking from my car to another air conditioned budling produces as much sweat as if I just ran 3 miles, it is gross.

I feel like my personality type tends to be cold as well. I’m just not naturally a “strike up a conversation with a stranger” type of person although my mom really is. It literally pains her to be in close proximity of a stranger, like an elevator, and not talk to them. I have a really hard time opening up with people, even friends I have known a long time, I think specifically because of my illness (Bipolar Diagnosis at 17 years old). I typically, in my day to day life, try to be pretty private about my illness so that I won’t have the mental illness stigma used against me by anyone that I am crazy or unhinged.

I think in a previous post I had mentioned that I was at odds with my ex-husband and my sister and this “being public thing” is a is a big part of those rifts, as they both try to embarrass me and try to make me feel bad about something that I cannot help and that I did not choose for myself.

Now I know this seems silly coming from someone that is putting everything out there about their illness in a blog, but is then very private in their personal life, and trust me I know it is weird and the irony is not lost on me! I just feel like this is my story to tell, not anyone else’s and the medium I have chosen to share it on is this blog and that is my own personal decision not my sisters or ex-husbands.

Long story short, I need to be more brave in my personal life and not let it take 20 years for someone to become a close, dear friend to me, like it has in the past. I need to live in the now, put myself out there, be more open in person about my struggles (not just online), and make more friends because I am sometimes lonely and there is only so much my parents and daughter can do to fill that void- I need friends too!
